About Janambhumi

In the history of newspapers in Assam, the Janambhumi Group stands as an institution of great repute. Janambhumi (weekly), published by this group, is the oldest newspaper currently in circulation in Assam. Similarly, Dainik Janambhumi, published by the same group, is a prestigious Assamese daily that has crossed its golden jubilee. The history of this group is both glorious and inspiring.

The news group began at the dawn of India’s independence as a powerful instrument of social service and nation-building. Janambhumi (weekly) was launched from Jorhat on 10 March 1947, on the eve of independence, with the noble objective of contributing to the building of the nation. Although this was the realization of the dream of Jananayak Deveshwar Sharma, a veteran freedom fighter and one of the most influential figures in post-independence Assam politics, it was his worthy brother Karmayogi Kanak Chandra Sharma who nurtured and strengthened Janambhumi.

On 1 June 1972, twenty-five years after the publication of Janambhumi, the Janambhumi Group launched the Assamese daily newspaper Dainik Janambhumi from Jorhat. At a time when publishing a daily newspaper from a suburban town was a major challenge, this marked a significant milestone in Assam’s journalistic history.

Initially edited by Kanak Chandra Sharma, the newspaper later saw the editorial leadership of Praful Baruah, Jatindra Kumar Bargohain, Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty, Dev Kumar Bora, Hemant Barman, Arun Kumar Das, and Utpal Baruah. Dr. Jogendra Nath Barua served as the Chief Advisor, while currently, the Executive Editor is senior journalist Sanjib Kumar Phookan.

Janambhumi has always believed that journalism is a social responsibility — to educate, inform, and empower the people.

Throughout its journey, Janambhumi has played a vital role in major social and political movements such as the Language Movement, the Oil Refinery Movement, and the Assam Movement.

In 2023, Prag News (Sanjive Narain Group of Companies) joined hands with Janambhumi. Under the leadership of industrialist and social worker Dr. Sanjive Narain, the organization gained renewed strength and direction. The integration of print and electronic media further enhanced its reach.

Today, Janambhumi is published from Guwahati, Tinsukia, and Bongaigaon. With the launch of its digital platform, the newspaper has successfully adapted to the evolving media landscape while staying true to its founding principles.

The Sunday magazine “Basundhara”, edited by Sankab Kausik Baruah, along with the creative contributions of veteran photojournalist Reba Kumar Bora and cartoonist Ranjiv Gogoi, adds further depth to the publication.

After decades of dedicated service, Janambhumi continues to uphold the values envisioned by its founders — serving the people, upholding truth, and strengthening democracy.
